{"id":457,"date":"2009-01-05T11:17:29","date_gmt":"2009-01-05T16:17:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/toddsingleton.net\/chronicle\/index.php\/?p=457"},"modified":"2009-01-05T15:39:46","modified_gmt":"2009-01-05T20:39:46","slug":"457","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/toddsingleton.net\/chronicle\/2009\/01\/05\/457\/","title":{"rendered":"HyperMiling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/toddsingleton.net\/chronicle\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/matrix.JPG\" title=\"matrix.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/toddsingleton.net\/chronicle\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/matrix.JPG\" alt=\"2003 Toyota Matrix\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"10\" hspace=\"10\" \/><\/a>I conducted an experiment this morning.\u00a0 I drove to work 5 Mph slower to see how much gas I would save.\u00a0 I was impressed by the difference.\u00a0\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t have a real accurate way to measure the actual gas mileage.\u00a0 I had to go by the gas gauge itself.\u00a0 It usually takes me almost a 1\/4 of a tank one way in Amy&#8217;s Hyundai Santa Fe.\u00a0 It gets about 20 MPG on average.\u00a0 This is thanks to the AWD option which is great in the rain but hell on gas.\u00a0 This morning I did the trip on 1\/8th of a tank.\u00a0 It was half, or almost half the gas, I would normally burn at 75 mph.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/toddsingleton.net\/chronicle\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/2004-mazda-3.jpg\" title=\"2004-mazda-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/toddsingleton.net\/chronicle\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/2004-mazda-3.jpg\" alt=\"2004 Mazda 3\" align=\"left\" vspace=\"10\" hspace=\"10\" \/><\/a>This got me thinking some more about the idea of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hypermiling.com\/\">hypermiling<\/a>.\u00a0 Now the guys who go out and buy a Nascar ice vest so they never have to turn on the AC are ridorkculous. \u00a0 Everyone was talking about their gas mileage when we hit $4 a gallon.\u00a0 Now it&#8217;s back under $2 and no one cares.\u00a0 I have the cheapest gas in Wake county 4 miles from my house at $1.38 as of this AM.\u00a0 With a commute of 42 miles one way, I still care.\u00a0 I spend no less than $48 a week on gas even at $1.40 or less. \u00a0 I reached a high of $130 a week at the price peak in the ol&#8217; F150.\u00a0 Never again.\u00a0 My goal is a preemptive strike against possible rising gas prices.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve resolved to monitor my gas mileage while trying not to become obsessive about it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/toddsingleton.net\/chronicle\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/protege5.jpg\" title=\"protege5.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/toddsingleton.net\/chronicle\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/protege5.jpg\" alt=\"Mazda Protege 5.jpg\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"10\" hspace=\"10\" \/><\/a>I will start by making sure I buy the right car.\u00a0 This has become a challenge lately since I&#8217;m trying to avoid financing with a bank and all the used econo cars got sucked up during the $4 a gallon era.\u00a0 I tried to buy a 2004 Civic.\u00a0\u00a0 It was salt corroded beyond hope. \u00a0 I&#8217;ll still look for one but I&#8217;m starting to set my eyes on some others, specifically the Mazda Protege5, the Toyota Matrix, and Mazda3.\u00a0 All three are gas sippers and are suppose to hold up under heavy mileage.\u00a0 I need to make my decision and a purchase by no later than January 15th.\u00a0 I have to travel down to Manning, SC that weekend and can&#8217;t leave Amy without a car.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I conducted an experiment this morning.\u00a0 I drove to work 5 Mph slower to see how much gas I would save.\u00a0 I was impressed by the difference.\u00a0\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t have a real accurate way to measure the actual gas mileage.\u00a0 I had to go by the gas gauge itself.\u00a0 It usually takes me almost a &hellip;
